Lilli Doll

Ruth Handler got her idea from the Lilli Doll. Lilli was orginally a German cartoon character and in 1953 they made her into a doll. Ruth saw these dolls and decided to make her Barbie similar. In 1964, Mattel acquired the rights to the doll so the Lilli Doll had to stop. The Lilli Doll and the Barbie doll were very much alike.

When Was Barbie First Sold?

The first Barbie was first launched on March the 9th, 1959 at New York International American Toy Fair.
Here is a picture of the first Babie. She wore a white and black zebra print swimsuit with a ponytail in either blonde or brunette. Charlotte Johnson designed Barbie's clothes. The dolls were manufactured in Japan. 350,000 Barbies were sold in the first year of production.
Barbie had pale white skin, eyeshadow and lipstick on. She had round holes of copper tubes in the bottom of her feet like in the picture shown.

Who Invented Barbie?

The Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler. Her own daughter was named Barbra. The Ken doll was named after Ruth's son. Barbie first had bendable legs in 1965. This here is a picture of Ruth.
Ruth went to Mattel Corp with her ideas.
