First Bendable Legs Barbie

In 1965, Barbie was first created with bendable legs. She could only be bent at the knees. Barbie's clothes also changed, she wore a one-piece swimsuit with a turquoise bottom and multi-striped top. She had a page-boy haircut (a short bob). She had more intense makeup than the original Barbie doll and her hair colour ranged from blonde to dark brown. Here is a picture of what she looked like.

Lilli Doll

Ruth Handler got her idea from the Lilli Doll. Lilli was orginally a German cartoon character and in 1953 they made her into a doll. Ruth saw these dolls and decided to make her Barbie similar. In 1964, Mattel acquired the rights to the doll so the Lilli Doll had to stop. The Lilli Doll and the Barbie doll were very much alike.

Here is a picture of the first Babie. She wore a white and black zebra print swimsuit with a ponytail in either blonde or brunette. Charlotte Johnson designed Barbie's clothes. The dolls were manufactured in Japan. 350,000 Barbies were sold in the first year of production.
Barbie had pale white skin, eyeshadow and lipstick on. She had round holes of copper tubes in the bottom of her feet like in the picture shown.
